As a junior at Northeastern University, I report for The Huntington News, the university’s independent student newspaper, where I serve as the finance beat writer, women’s hockey beat writer and as a copy editor. My finance reporting focuses on budgets, grant funding and spending decisions at a multi-billion-dollar institution.

I also contribute to The Hockey News, The Ice Garden and College Hockey News with game analysis and profiles.

Previously, I worked as a community co-op at Boston.com, a major regional news outlet affiliated with The Boston Globe, reported as a news correspondent for MIT News and served as deputy sports editor at The Huntington News.

Want a co-op? You might want to avoid NU London, students say.

When Washington, D.C. native Kaylee Burkett was applying to college, she was immediately drawn to Northeastern for its renowned co-op program. Her excitement about the university’s London campus, coupled with the promise that she could still go on co-op outside of its flagship Boston location, led her to accept an offer at NU London.
“That’s what I was planning on,” Burkett, a second-year politics and international relations major, said of going on co-op. “And what I think I chose Northeastern...

What are indirect costs, the research money being targeted by the Trump administration?

There are thousands of moving parts that make up Northeastern and support its research output. From shiny new buildings to electricity and salaries, the list goes on and on. Combined, it’s terribly expensive.
One way Northeastern makes up for those costs, specifically the costs that help its research programs, is indirect cost recovery, which covers costs that aren’t tied to a specific grant. It’s a mechanism for the federal government to incentivize universities to perform research.
Now, a Tr...

Northeastern researchers wrestle with ‘demoralizing’ grant cuts

In 2024, Katherine Trice, then a third-year psychology doctoral student, received the prestigious National Institutes of Health’s F31 diversity fellowship. It supplied a necessary equipment boost for her thesis work, which addresses how autistic and neurotypical adults learn and retain vocabulary.
Trice was able to apply for the specific fellowship, which is reserved for individuals from underrepresented backgrounds, because she herself is autistic.

Northeastern London students didn’t think Trump’s end to DEI would affect them. Then, they saw changes.

Piranas Jeyanathan, a history and politics alumnus of Northeastern University London, knew that diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI, policies in the United States were changing. What he didn’t expect was that his university in the United Kingdom would follow suit.
The title of the university’s DEI website was changed to “Belonging at Northeastern London” as recently as March 16, according to Internet Archive results. And in a March 19 newsletter sent to students and faculty, NU London referr...

Northeastern women’s hockey knows how to stop pucks. Here’s a look inside its goaltending dynasty.

Back to front — that’s how you build a hockey team. It’s what made Dave Flint, the head coach of Northeastern’s women’s hockey, the winningest coach in program history.
When Flint started at Northeastern in 2008, he was told one thing: “G.A.G.G.,” or, “get a good goalie.” As a former collegiate goaltender himself, he took the advice seriously — and it changed the trajectory of his team. Goaltenders Aerin Frankel, Gwyneth Philips and now freshman Lisa Jönsson have become Northeastern legends ove...

After a century, Mills College Children’s School to close its doors

After 100 years of educating children in the San Francisco Bay Area, Mills College Children’s School will close after the 2025-26 school year.
Besides its college campus — acquired by Northeastern in 2022 — Mills College, now Northeastern Oakland, is also home to Mills College Children’s School, a laboratory school that has taught thousands of students since opening in 1926. The Oakland-based private school’s focus on diversity and experimental learning, as well as its close link to Mills’ early...
